Tradition Nearly a Century Strong

Lake Garrison began as a simple cranberry bog and has grown into a cherished summer destination for generations of families. Today, thousands visit each year to enjoy the lake’s classic charm, with more than 100 families calling it their summer home.

The story of Lake Garrison started with the vision of John and Cora Garrison, who owned a grocery store in Pitman, New Jersey. On his business trips between Pitman and Elmer, John often passed a large cranberry bog on a site once known as Kindall’s Sawmill. Inspired by a dream in which he transformed the bog into a beautiful lake, he purchased the land from E. Ireland of Woodbury and moved there with Cora and their two daughters, Leona and Evelyn.

In May 1935, on Decoration Day, Lake Garrison officially opened. John Garrison personally built the rustic log cabins that still surround the lake today, creating a welcoming community and timeless atmosphere.

After Mr. Garrison’s passing in 1944, the property was sold in 1947 to Lake Garrison Inc., which has continued to preserve and enhance his original vision.

From a dream to a favorite family retreat, Lake Garrison remains a place where tradition, community, and summertime joy come together and in 2025, we proudly celebrated our 90th anniversary.
